Roy Harper / Red Arrow

Everything that had gone wrong had been Roy’s fault. Sure, he might blame Ollie, but Roy was the one who had decided to shoot that poison into his veins. Ollie hadn’t forced him to take them, Roy had made the decision himself. It had been his choice, his decision, his mistake.

Of course, it had also been his decision to stay clean. Hal and Dinah had helped him initially, but it was Roy who fought off the cravings, and knew that he could do better. He made the choice every single day to be a hero, that he didn’t need the drugs anymore. He was stronger than that.

That was one of the reasons Roy had tried so hard to help Nightwing. He tried to keep Dick from going completely insane, but Dick had made his own choice to the contrary.

Roy wasn’t responsible for Dick’s actions, any more than Ollie had been responsible for Roy’s. But like Hal and Dinah had been there for him, he would be there for Dick when he was ready to come back.

Every single day Roy had to make a decision. Was he going to stay clean today, or was he going to fail. So far, he had made the right decision every day. He hadn't relapsed. He was fairly sure that he never would. Because every single day he could get up and remember that he had people who cared about him, who wanted him to stay strong.

But that wasn't always enough. He had other responsibilities, besides being a father and a friend. He was a hero, that was his job. And he wouldn't be any sort of hero if he didn't try to make it so that nobody else ended up in his position.

Which is why every month, without fail, he stood in front of a group of teens that were labeled at risk, and spoke to them about his experiences.

It was amazing how much hearing it from a hero seemed to make a difference for them.

Roy was a superhero. He was a member of the Justice League. He was a father. He stood up for himself, he cracked jokes (though not as many as Gar did) and he never ran from a fight.

He had worked hard to earn this spot in the League. To make sure that he was respected as a hero. As someone more than that kid that Ollie screwed up. He may not be the equal of Superman and Wonder Woman, but even without powers like theirs, they wanted him on the team. To be one of the elites. One of the best in the world.

And maybe if he kept being brave, if he kept working with the League, maybe they would forget that he was a junkie. Maybe they would forget all that he had done to support his habit.

Maybe they would really see him as a hero, as the man he had become, and not as the failure he had been.
